Assistant Controller
June 30, 2021Gem Cabinets, a locally owned and operated family business, has been making homes beautiful with custom cabinetry for over 40 years. We are a leader in the cabinet industry in Edmonton.
The Assistant Controller will support, and work closely with, the Controller on the financial aspects of the organization. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for managing 5 positions within the Admin. team (A/R, A/P, Data Entry, Admin. Coordinator, Reception).
The Assistant Controller will work in a fast-paced but casual environment and play a critical role to ensure the financial statements and reconciliations for the corporate entities are completed in a timely manner. They will lead the 5 direct reports of the Administrative team to provide timely and accurate processing of information in all systems.
Requirements:
- Manage, coach and provide good leadership to the 5 direct reports within the Administration team
- Work closely with support staff to meet expectations
- Ensure staff are productive, engaged, and maintain open, collaborative relationships within the team
- Manage and address all significant performance concerns and complete documentation
- Keep record of timesheets for Administration Department staff
- Keep track of holidays and booked time off to avoid potential conflicts
- Ensure proper coverage of duties so all tasks are able to be completed in a timely manner with minimal impact to the Administration Department
- Reconciliation of various G/L accounts on a monthly basis for operating entities
- Full cycle accounting including posting journal entries and bank reconciliations
- Assist Controller in month end process to provide accurate and timely monthly financial statements and reporting for operating entities
- Intercompany transactions and account reconciliations
- Monthly variance analysis and reporting including:
- POS, sales and margin reports for senior management
- Revenue earned vs Actual Report
- WIP/Inventory reports
- Maintain fixed asset tracking and amortization, including posting of monthly journal entries
- Support in preparation of annual budgets and year end process including working papers
- GST analysis, processing, and remittance for multiple entities
- Process write-off’s of accounts receivable
- Set up new vendors in BP and GP
- Prepare agenda and powerpoint presentation for monthly Admin. Safety Meetings
- Other duties as assigned by Controller
Knowledge and skills required:
- 5+ years’ experience in an accounting supervisory role
- Strong accounting skills. Post-secondary degree or diploma with a focus on accounting.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Experience in Microsoft Dynamics GP accounting software is considered an asset
- Strong time management skills with ability to handle multiple priorities effectively
- Excellent and effective written and verbal communications skills
- Strong analytical skills and detail orientated
- Ability to remain focused under pressure and work in a team environment to ensure reporting deadlines are met

- Strong interpersonal, leadership, and customer service skills
- Ability and willingness to work extended hours during peak times if required
