Small Kitchen Ideas
July 12, 2016When meeting with clients, often we’ll hear ‘we wish our kitchen was bigger’, or, ‘how do we make the most of our small kitchen space?’ If you have a kitchen on the smaller side, it doesn’t mean your space needs to feel that way. In a perfect world we’d all have beautiful chef’s kitchens but in reality, that isn’t always the case. If you don’t have your spacious dream kitchen, there are a few things you can do to make your space feel bigger, brighter and add a bit more storage without compromising style.
Having enough storage is often a concern in kitchens. To make the most of your space, take your kitchen cabinets all the way to the ceiling with extra tall upper cabinets or double stack a smaller cabinet above your top one to make sure that you maximize the storage in your kitchen. Put the items you use the least often at the very top, leaving the most accessible storage for the items you use most frequently.
To make a small space feel larger, there are a few design choices you can make to create the look of a larger space. Using a monochromatic color scheme can keep your kitchen from feeling overly cluttered and therefore smaller. For example, by sticking to a palette of white and off white colors for your cabinets, countertop and backsplash, your kitchen can feel bright and open even if it is on the smaller side. Or, if you want to opt for a minimalist look, removing upper cabinets in favor of open shelving is a very impactful way to create an open space. By leaving open shelving for styled kitchen goods, your kitchen can feel more spacious without large cabinets taking up space.
